Intransa to Outpace FC-SAN With the Industry’s First 10 GbE IP-SAN Demonstration at SNW Booth #PP36

Intransa partners with Chelsio, Neterion, and Swan Labs to demonstrate a quantum jump in performance and interoperability of its modular storage grid solution running on 10 GbE Infrastructure

STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, PHOENIX, AZ — APRIL 12, 2005

Intransa, the first company to deliver the most flexible storage grid for mid-tier organizations and large enterprises, today announced that it will demonstrate the industry’s first 10 GbE IP-SAN at Storage Networking World in Phoenix, AZ in booth PP36. Intransa will lead this multi-vendor interoperability demonstration using clustering inter-connect 10 GbE solutions from Chelsio Communications and Neterion, and WAN optimization and acceleration solutions from Swan Labs.

The power of an IP-based storage grid will be seen in this interoperability demonstration, which uses Intransa’s next generation of IntraStor® storage controllers in a standard dual controller, high availability configuration. Two different 10 GbE interfaces are used in the demonstration, including a Chelsio T210 Protocol Engine and Neterion Xframe® 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. Standard server hosts communicate using iSCSI over a standard Extreme Networks switch with 10 GbE uplinks. Within the same network environment, Intransa’s asynchronous replication service is being run over a simulated, standard IP WAN link and accelerated using Swan Labs NetCelera® 400. “10 GbE has already proven its value in the aggregation of traffic among switches and in high-performance computing applications. It now promises to fill a similar need in corporate data center storage networks. Driving this need for 10 GbE are higher bandwidth applications like data mining, video editing, video streaming, multimedia content distribution and clustered scientific computing,” said Peter Wang, Intransa co-founder and CTO.

“The Intransa 10 GbE IP-SAN demonstration, running with commodity 10 GbE network components and infrastructure, offers our customers a first hand experience of standards compliant interoperability, advanced scalability and the reliability characteristics of our unique storage grid solution,” said Mr. Wang.

“Through the use of Ethernet TCP/IP infrastructure and management tools, our T210 Protocol Engine enables enterprises to extend SAN connectivity without distance limitations and does so with the highest storage transport rates possible,” said Kianoosh Naghshineh, president and CEO of Chelsio. “Chelsio empowers some of the industry's most innovative solution providers to deliver enterprise-grade storage systems that uniquely address this rapidly expanding market.”

“The Intransa IP-SAN clearly demonstrates the performance, interoperability and cost advantages that 10 Gigabit Ethernet offers for storage applications,” stated Dave Zabrowski, president and CEO of Neterion. “We are very pleased to be participating in this demonstration and would invite everyone at the show to come by the Intransa booth and learn how they can implement a non-proprietary and cost-effective alternative to FC SANs.”

“The need for high-speed storage solutions on the LAN has become a necessity for corporations,” said Tom Tansy, vice president of marketing at Swan Labs. “Equally important today is a solution that gives you the same type of performance over the WAN for applications such as disaster recovery. Our enterprise application shaping solutions offer an order of magnitude improvement in performance over the WAN. We are pleased to be working with Intransa to make this combined solution a reality for our customers.”

Intransa, the first IP-SAN vendor to support SMI-S

In a parallel announcement, Intransa also stated its support for the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). Created by SNIA, SMI-S seeks to develop and standardize interoperable storage management technologies; and to aggressively promote them to the storage, networking and end user communities.

“By supporting SMI-S, Intransa includes a common protocol interconnect interface in our suite of native IP-SAN solutions,” noted Mr. Wang. “The adoption of standards that evolve from SMI-S increases the rapid deployment of interoperable storage networks, expanding our addressable markets. It also allows our solution partners to focus on developing value-added functionality at a level higher than just protocol interconnectivity,” he added. “End-users implementing products that conform to SMI-S will see benefits like increased reliability, security, and manageability and a reduced TCO.”

Support for Asynchronous Replication for cost-effective, nearline DR

Running on existing Gigabit Ethernet infrastructures, asynchronous replication provides the ability to reliably migrate data over unlimited distances and delivers a non-disruptive and cost effective backup and near line disaster recovery solution to enterprises.

“By implementing StorAR, our asynchronous replication service, system administrators can perform replication functions right at the Storage Controller (SC) level. This means that the replications are transparent to the application server; and as the replications are asynchronous, it does not impact the performance of the application server,” stated Mr. Wang.
