Intransa Announces Availability of Thin Provisioning on StorStac IP SAN
StorStac DynaStac Increases Scalability, Efficiency and Capacity of Intransa IP SAN to More Than One Petabyte
SAN JOSE, California — August 13, 2007
Intransa, the global leader of scalable, network-centric IP storage solutions, today announced DynaStac thin provisioning as part of its StorStac IP Storage System. Intransa's DynaStac thin provisioning application allows storage space to be easily allocated to servers on a just-enough and just-in-time basis. Intransa DynaStac increases the scalability, efficiency and capacity of the Intransa IP SAN, which scales beyond 1,000 terabytes and supporting 1, 2 and 10GbE PCU front-end controllers. Customers around the world currently use Intransa's IP StorStac Storage System for business-critical applications such as server and storage consolidation, application development and testing, data mining, video surveillance and imaging.
“There's no question that thin provisioning is the wave of the future and that Intransa, as an early market provider of this type of technology, is onto something big,” says Heidi Biggar, analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. “The efficiency and utilization benefits of thin provisioning are simply too great to ignore. User environments demand this type of functionality. I'd be hard-pressed to name an IT shop today that wouldn't see immediate CAPEX and OPEX benefits from being able to dynamically pool and allocate storage resources among multiple applications.”
Through DynaStac, customers are assured they are receiving the maximum efficiency as their needs for increased storage utilization and capacity grow. The addition of DynaStac allows the customer the most efficient use of their storage when used in combination with the Intransa IP StorStac. And for those environments where "going green" is a requirement, Intransa's DynaStac thin provisioning assists in taking a major step in making that happen through storage consolidation. Since few, if any, technology vendors can scale a single platform from four terabytes to one petabyte, the Intransa IP StorStac SAN stands alone. The power of the StorStac Manager graphical user interface (GUI) makes DynaStac possible, allowing customers to dynamically grow volumes or logical unit numbers (LUNs), as needed.
StorStac DynaStac features include:
- A disk group supporting one or many volumes, further improving storage utilization. DynaStac dynamically provisions available disks, according to the disk group's policy, to support the growth of all of the volumes using that disk group.
- Multiple volumes provided on one Intransa StorStac IP SAN using DynaStac, each with performance and capacity fine-tuned to application requirements for maximum usage (e.g., home directory file storage, database block storage and log files.)
- Policy-based disk groups supporting rapid volume (LUN) setup and configuration. Volumes take on characteristics (e.g., RAID type) of the underlying disk group.
- Policy customization and new policy creation to match an application's characteristics and requirements.
Many Intransa customers already use advanced StorStac features for important IT applications such as server and storage consolidation with VMware. Scalable video surveillance solutions integrated with offerings from security monitoring organizations involved in Intransa's StorAlliance Technology Partner Program are also in use.
“With advanced power and performance capabilities offered with 10GbE and the expandability of Intransa systems, the addition of thin provisioning through Intransa's StorStac DynaStac is even more critical,” stated Lee Zipin, vice president of Engineering, Intransa. “With the combined capabilities of an Intransa IP SAN and StorStac DynaStac customers can realize significant cost savings by making their storage utilization even more efficient, and getting the best out of every drive in their storage system.”
All of Intransa's powerful software features are included free of charge with StorStac IP network storage systems including DynaStac and its fourth generation StorStac Manager GUI, command line interface (CLI), StorCluster, Snapshot and StorAR asynchronous replication. Features such as selectable RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and RAID 10 support and support for 1GbE, 2GbE and 10GbE are built into StorStac's OS operating system.
Making the best possible use of available storage capacity will be even more important as disks drives continue to grow in density. Intransa customers can mix and match StorStac Systems to support 250, 500 and 750Gb drives with 1,000Gb or 1 terabyte versions expected to be available in the fourth quarter.
The complete StorStac System line is available through StorPartner Channel Partner Program members worldwide.
